Welcome news for housebuilders this week, following government reforms to introduce new measures to boost construction, and help production, without putting health and safety at risk. Following lockdown in March, many building sites were closed, due to difficulty of observing social distancing rules. The housing industry welcomes measures introduced by the UK Government for allowing planning permission deadlines to be extended, giving leeway to 24,000 homes that were due to expire by the end of June. 

The housing secretary has announced that planning approvals with an expiry date between the start of lockdown and the end of this year, will have consents extended until April 2021. In measures also aimed to help developers, the planning appeals process will be sped up, and following agreement from local councils, in moves to allow sites to catch up, builders will be allowed to work more flexible working hours.
