They have originals and sculptures made by the UK’s major publishers, such as Demonfort Fine Art, Buckingham Fine Art, Wishbone Publishing and Edge Sculpture to name a few. Not only do they sell masterpieces, but they also provide a conservation framing service.

Our Managing Directors, Darren Leggett and Helen Graham often purchase wonderful pieces of art from M P Gallery. Darren caught up with the owners a couple of days ago and asked them a few questions, here’s what they had to say.

How did you come together and why art?

I’m Michael Maltby, art is in my blood, my mother is an artist and I naturally followed in her footsteps. I started out at the age of 16 being trained as a fine art picture framer, whilst studying art and design through college. I quickly found my calling working in art galleries, which meant I could do what I loved best, living and breathing art 24/7. After 20 years of running art galleries, I decided to bring all my knowledge and experience to open M P Gallery in Colchester with one of my oldest friends, Paul Burgess. We had a vision to establish an honest and trustworthy business based on old school values where every customer receives a very high standard service.

I’m Paul Burgess and this is my first foray into owning a business, other members of my family have and like them I wanted to find something I had a passion for. I have always had an appreciation for the talent behind producing a thought-provoking piece of art. It has been a whirlwind of 4 years and it has not been a decision I have regretted, as every day is different, and you get a buzz when a customer goes home with a piece of art they love and display proudly in their home for the family and friends to see.

How long have you been involved in the industry?

24 years.

What is the most popular type of artwork people like to have in their homes?

Every customer is unique and will strive to find their own perfect piece, which is why we pride ourselves of offering a great range of popular artists that produce groundbreaking new releases all the time. By having over 150 pieces to choose from, there should always be something to suite everyone’s tastes.

How does art influence a home?

Art is deeply personal and can represent a wide range of concepts, but when you find the perfect piece it can be the corner stone in setting the tone for any room.

What is your favourite piece and why?

My favourite pieces change all the time as we work with some of the best artists in the UK, but for me this week it has to be a piece called ‘Mr Stark, Peter Parker’ by Rob Bishop, the original etched into maple veneer wood, wood stains and aerosol. – Michael Maltby

I don’t have a favourite piece but looking round my house I do have a favourite style, which is a nostalgic one. Every piece in my home reminds me of a happy time in my past. – Paul Burgess.
